About Epic Stoic

Epic Stoic turns 2,000-year-old Stoic philosophy into tools for modern life: for the hard email at work, the argument at home, and the worry that keeps you up at 3 a.m.

Why this site exists

Stoicism is everywhere online now, but most of it is quote cards and hustle slogans. Lines are cut from their context, credited to the wrong person, or bent into something the Stoics never meant. The real texts are calmer, stranger and far more useful than that.

Epic Stoic goes back to the sources. Seneca wrote letters to a friend. Epictetus taught a classroom of young men who wanted to be free. Marcus Aurelius kept a private notebook while running an empire. We read what they actually wrote and ask one question: how do I use this today?

How we write

  • Sources first. Every quote is cited by work and book, section or letter, so you can check it yourself. We use public-domain translations (George Long for Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, Richard Gummere for Seneca’s letters) unless we say otherwise.
  • No fake quotes. If a famous line can’t be traced to a real text, we say so, or we leave it out.
  • Practice, not just theory. Each article ends with something you can do today: an exercise, a question for your journal, or a worksheet.
  • Plain English. No jargon, no hype, no promises that philosophy will make you rich.
  • Kept up to date. We revise older articles when we find a better source, a clearer explanation or a mistake.

How the site is funded

Epic Stoic is free to read. It is paid for by advertising and by affiliate links: as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases when you buy a book through our links, at no extra cost to you. We only recommend books we would hand to a friend, and advertisers have no say in what we write.
